Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival: A Tradition of Culture, Family, and Flavor

Every year, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, people across China and around the world come together to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival (端午节). This ancient holiday is not only a vibrant display of tradition and culture, but also a meaningful reminder of family, health, and remembrance.

The Legend Behind the Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival honors Qu Yuan, a loyal poet and minister from ancient China. When his homeland fell into ruin, Qu Yuan, in despair, drowned himself in the Miluo River. People, deeply moved by his loyalty and love for his country, raced out in boats to search for him and threw rice into the water to keep the fish away from his body. This story gave rise to two of the most beloved traditions of the festival: dragon boat racing and zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves).

Time-Honored Traditions

  • Zongzi (粽子): These delicious sticky rice parcels, often filled with meats, nuts, or sweet bean paste, are enjoyed by families everywhere during the festival. Every region has its own special recipe, adding to the rich variety and personal touch of the celebration.

  • Dragon Boat Racing: Teams row long, ornately decorated boats to the beat of a drum, a thrilling and symbolic event representing community spirit and remembrance.

  • Hanging Mugwort & Wearing Perfume Sachets: These customs are believed to ward off disease and bring good fortune during the hot summer months.

A Modern Meaning

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is more than a historical tribute — it’s a celebration of heritage, togetherness, and well-being. Whether you're sharing zongzi with loved ones or simply taking a moment to reflect on tradition, it's a time to honor the past and embrace the present.

At XURUI, we believe in the power of tradition to connect us — across cultures, generations, and time. As we celebrate this special holiday, we wish you health, happiness, and meaningful moments with those who matter most.
